Word Counter

Word Counter's functionality should be as clear as day when you read its name. This lightweight application is capable of counting all words and characters in large amounts of text. Its straightforward controls allow even the most inexperienced user to master this application in no time. Although it has been tested on Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6, Word Counter is known to work on most OS X versions.

All you have to do is copy any amount of text, paste it on the application's clean and simple user interface and click a button. In just one second, you will know how many words and characters you have in your text and you will also have the instances number. It is also possible to simply drop one or more text files over the user interface. In this case, the application will show you the word and character count for each file, as well as the total figures for all files combined.

If you want to work in your favorite text editor, you may click the "TextEdit" option, on the same user interface, to bring up a compact word counter, which you can place anywhere on your screen and you won't have to worry that it will get in your way. You may work in various text editors, including TextEdit, MS Word, Pages and many others.

Besides its word counting capabilities, the application provides other useful features. It can count the number of instances for a given word or phrase in a text, provide a list with the frequency and length of each word in the text and it can also generate readability statistics. Another useful feature is Word Counter's progress tracker. You can specify a number of words, characters and instances as a goal and the application will let you know how much you have left until you reach that goal.
